“Reporting from the Margins” is a presentation designed for Filipino broadcast journalist Jeff Canoy. It discusses his experiences and lessons learned while covering the Marawi war between Philippine armed forces and Islamic State-linked militants. This presentation was part of his speaking tour in Canada and in the Philippines after he was awarded the prestigious 2018 Marshall McLuhan Fellowship for journalists.
For this custom presentation, Jeff sent me a rough outline of the text content and high-resolution photos he took in Marawi.
Approach
After a thorough review of his materials, I designed the slides to reflect the harrowing experience of war. Bold fonts and paint smears on a dark color palette were used to underline the gravity of the situation, and raw photographs were prioritized for visual storytelling.
