Background

“The Woman of Balangiga” is a Filipino documentary produced by ABS-CBN journalist Jeff Canoy. It narrates the story of Casiana Nacionales, the only woman who joined the attack against American forces in Balangiga, Eastern Samar during the Philippine-American War in 1901.

When Jeff was invited by a museum to give a talk about the documentary, he reached out to have a slide deck designed. As with our previous project, he shared his initial content outline and a selection of high-resolution photos, giving me plenty of image options.

Approach

To develop the look and feel of the slide deck, I studied Jeff’s photos of present-day Balangiga and previewed portions of the documentary. From these, an old rose hue was identified as the main color, one that balances the feminine themes of the story with the realities of war. The color was dainty but it also closely resembled the shade of dried bloodstains. The layout of the deck follows a grid that highlights large images and provides sufficient space for descriptive text, similar to the layout of museum exhibit panels.
